A welcome message from Mr K Gallacher, Principal

Principal's Welcome

Welcome to Ormiston Maritime Academy

It is an honour to serve as the Principal of Ormiston Maritime Academy, as I firmly believe that I have the best job in the world! To get to spend every day leading such a talented team who support our wonderful students is indeed a very special privilege.

At our Academy we believe that all students should have the opportunity to learn, work and achieve within a safe, caring and engaging environment. We aspire to offer students the best possible opportunities available and celebrate every success no matter how big or small. We believe in traditional family values and the Academy prides itself on being a school, a family and a Community.

Our commitment to our School Community is:

  • We are committed to do whatever it takes to provide a vibrant education for all our students.
  • We will provide a structured environment which is founded upon high expectations and no excuses.
  • Through great teaching and learning our students will gain the skills and qualifications they need to lead happy and successful lives and to make a positive contribution to society.

"Education is the most powerful weapon you can use to change the world"

Nelson Mandela

A great education provides our young people with choice, our goal is to ensure that every one of our students has the maximum number of opportunities available to them when they entry the world of work. As a career changer myself I know what is needed to succeed in the work place. Our approach is focused on preparing our young people for their future career and as such we focus on developing our students’ employability skills through nurturing and shaping our students in preparation for working life. It is this wrap around, whole child support that sets us apart.

Since the summer 2018, the Academy has been working hard forging new partnerships with industry leaders, which will benefit our students and the local community.   I am proud to announce that these partnerships include :

1.) HETA – together we will be jointly delivering our Engineering qualification, using HETA’s first class engineering facilities at Stallingborough. Our students’ receive expert instruction from HETA’s tutors to complete the practical elements of their course.

2.) Avant – a local apprenticeship provider who will deliver a Hair and Beauty qualification to our students. Taught completely off-site in modern, state of the art facilities in Grimsby Town Centre.   Every student who successfully completes the Hair and Beauty qualification with Avant will be offered an apprenticeship on leaving the Academy.

3.) Grimsby Sea Cadets – who have kindly agreed for the Academy to utilise their workshop facilities on Grimsby Docks, to enable our students to undertake a motor vehicle qualification.

The Academy have also enhanced our working relationships with the Humberston Lions, and together with Tesco’s and the FairShare Organisation, successfully organised and managed some charitable events during the Christmas holidays; the beneficiaries of whom included many of our families and other members of the local community.

I am delighted to announce that the Academy have also partnered with other local businesses including Associated British Ports, F R Townsend and IT@Spectrum, and through their kind generosity we were able to support 12 of our families with Christmas hampers.

From our Christmas Newsletter you will also see that in conjunction with our Leo’s Club, our staff were able to provide yet more Christmas parties for a large number of primary students and also residents of local care homes.  The positive feedback we have received from members of the community has been heart warming.

I have the very highest expectations of, and for, all our students. Together with the Ormiston Maritime team, my focus is to drive continual improvement through raising standards and aspirations, to always expect outstanding behaviour and to support every student to reach their full potential.

In the summer 2018, the Academy improved our examination outcomes, and we are delighted with this improvement but we know we need to improve the academic outcomes of the students further.  Our student attendance for the academic year 2017/18 has significantly improved and indeed I am proud that our joint hard work has been recognised by the Academy receiving an award from our Sponsor, OAT for the most improved attendance within the Trust.

As an Academy, we are committed to working together with our students’ families to ensure that each and every one of our students leaves the Academy a better person, not just academically but more resilient, confident and more socially aware of what they can achieve in the future and what they can aspire to become.

I am excited to lead our students, staff and the whole Academy community to the next stage in our development. It is our ambition for Maritime to become a school which is at the heart of our local community. You have a part to play in raising standards with us, we actively encourage our families and our local community to visit our school and to meet with the team and myself – come and join us on the journey as together we build the great school that our community deserves.
