This year, Ormiston Maritime Academy has offered students the opportunity to develop their oracy skills through its first weekly debate club. To celebrate their success, a team was entered for the National Up For Debate Competition.

On 26th April 2018, the team of three Year 7 students, a supporter, Miss Dale and Miss Warrender set off for Regional Heats in York with the target of winning just one of the three debates the students would take part in.

However, due to the hard work of the students, the team exceeded their target and won all three of the debates. Not only this, but Ormiston Maritime Academy finished runner up of the day.

In the time leading up to the competiton, all those involved in the club developed their ability to speak publicly, to speak confidently, and to broaden their knowledge of politics and real world issues. Through their success in the competition, the team learnt that hard work reaps rewards, and in future to set their targets high!

Ormiston Maritime Academy looks forward to more debating success in the future.
